Dentool strives to have repairs for air driven handpieces done in 24 to 48 hours with the typical repair cost averaging $149. An electric handpiece repaired by the manufacture will cost around a thousand dollars and take a month or more to get back. Although electric handpieces are much more complicated, we generally have them repaired in a couple of weeks and will still be under the manufactures repair cost.

Handpiece repair for all Midwest handpieces

Dentool is deticated to making our customers Midwest handpiece last as long as possible, fewer repairs for you.

What do we do to make our repairs last longer?

We use high grade parts, like Ceramic bearings, to see why ceramic bearings are so important click here.

Midwest is a very common handpiece used in today’s dental office. The Midwest Tradition and Quiet Air handpiece comes in three differant types. Midwest Tradition and Quiet Air standard (this is the one used with a bur wrench), Midwest Tradition and Quiet Air Lever, and Midwest Tradition and Quiet Air push button. We can convert the Midwest Tradition and Quiet Air standard and the lever to a push button to make it more convenent for you. See our page on converting.

Midwest also has the Midwest Stylus witch is just a push button. For handpiece repair pricing see our repair pricing lsit.

Dentool also does repairs on Midwest low speeds, like the Midwest Rhino, Shorty single speed and the Shorty two speed. See repair pricing lsit.

Midwest electric handpieces will have to be inspected of an accurat estimate. There are just to many variables with electric handpieces.

Handpiece Lubrication

Lubricating your handpiece is critical

There are many types of oil used for lubricating, the big question is what oil to use?

First of all by law you have to use a food grade oil, because you are putting it in someones mouth.

The difference between oils;

Some oils will burn when in side an autoclave, leaving a black residue. If the oil burns when autoclaved than there is nothing lubricating the handpiece, therefore you need to oil after autoclaving. Oils that burn at 275 degrees fahrenheit or less (autoclave temperature) can be very costly. Even if it is inexpensive you will need to use it more often to keep the handpiece lubricated, and to get out the residue it left behind.

Oils that have a higher burning point then 275 degrees fahrenheit will withstand autoclaving keeping the handpiece lubricated and not leaving behind extra debris.

Sticky oils (greasy like oils) will stick to the inside of the handpiece and stick to any debris that enters the handpiece trapping it inside. Because of its sticky nature it is difficult to flush out, holding in debris. This is like adding sand to your car engine oil, destroying things in a hurry.

Synthetic oil is what we would recommend. This would be an oil that is slippery but not sticky. A slippery oil will make everything slick reducing friction (oils purpose). This is good for all the parts in a turbine. Plus any debris in the handpiece will become slick causing it to flow through, keeping the inside clean. The cleaner the inside of the handpiece the better it will run and the longer it will last.

Dentool has tried many types of oil and the one we like best is a synthetic high temperature oil. It is a very slippery oil making it a self cleaning oil. When using our oil in a handpiece that has used a non synthetic oil it will go in clear and normally come out black. This tells us that there is debris buildup inside, when adding slippery oil it removes the stickiness and the debris is free to flow. After flushing with the slippery oil several times it will eventually come out clear and the handpiece will be well cleaned and lubricated.

Star Dental Handpiece Repair

Dentool uses high quality parts for long lasting quality repairs

Star dental handpieces are probably the most repaired dental handpiece on the market. Not because Star handpieces lack quality, but mostly because of two words, “Lube Free”.

There is an incredible misunderstanding when it comes to the words “lube free”. Many believe that by having a “lube free” bearing, there is little or no reason for lubricating the handpiece. This is wrong and it results in an increase in repair costs to your Star handpieces.

So where does Star come up with this claim of lube free? They are referring to the bearings not the entire handpiece. The bearings used in the turbine are considered lube free. Star’s lube free bearings are completely sealed and filled with a special lubricant that will withstand the heat of autoclaving. Because the bearings are sealed, the lubricant can not get out thereby having no need to lubricate, hence the marketing term “lube free”. Dentool only uses high grade sealed ceramic bearings on our Star turbine repairs. Turbines with sealed ceramic bearings will last longer. Click here to learn more about ceramic bearings.

Why do I lubricate my “lube free” handpiece? Remember the term “lube free” informs us that the bearings are sealed with a lubricant inside them exempting them from lubrication but the rest of your handpiece still needs to be lubricated routinely. You still ask, why? See below.
Reasons for Lubricating your Handpiece, Yes even the Star Lube Free Handpieces

1. It flushes out debris. When lubricating your handpiece debris within the handpiece is washed away adding to the longevity of your handpiece. When debris resides within the handpiece it causes breakdown of the turbine, again adding to your repair costs. Therefore regular flushing or purging of your handpiece is critical.

2. It keeps o-rings from drying out. Lubricant is being broken down every time you autoclave the handpiece. Which in turn provides less protection of the o-rings. The intense heat from autoclaving will cause the o-rings within the handpiece to dry out without proper lubrication. O-ring failure can cause turbine breakdown.

3. It prevents corrosion inside the handpiece. Corrosion is one cause of debris resulting in premature failure. Therefore it is highly recommended that you lubricate regularly.

How often should you lubricate your handpiece? First of all you can not lubricate an air driven handpiece to much, just run it prior to use to flush the excess oil out. We recommend lubricating before and after every use unless using a synthetic slippery oil. The oil used for lubricating can make a big differance, some oils will burn when autoclaved leaving behind more debris. If the oil burns it’s no longer in the handpiece doing any good. Unsealed bearings (we do not recommend) need to be lubricated before every use. If you have sealed ceramic bearings the reason to lubricate is to keep the inside of the handpiece clean and debris free. A purge unit is very helpful for keeping handpieces clean and lubricated.

Longer Lasting Repairs

Why do Dentool’s high speed handpiece repairs last longer than most handpiece repairs?

                     -the answer, Ceramic Bearings

Bearings are most often the first part that cause a handpiece to fail. By improving the quality and durability of the bearing, you’re adding to the handpieces longevity. Ceramic bearings extend the life time, enhance performance, and increase durability by reducing friction within the bearing. As a result the user experiences a smoother, faster and generally quieter handpiece.

Benefits of Ceramic Bearings

Non-Corrosive: Ceramic balls are resistant to rust, whereby most bearings are constructed of steel that will begin to erode causing debris within the bearing to generate intrusive friction resulting in breakdown.

Heat Resistant: Ceramic bearings conduct less heat than steel bearings. During the autoclave process steel bearings get excessively hot and expand resulting in misshaped, imprecise balls consequently accelerating the breakdown of the handpiece.

Light Weight: Ceramic is a lighter material than steel allowing the bearing to generate higher speeds while using less energy and maintaining a lower operating temperature.

More Durable: Ceramic balls are over 60% lighter, 50% stiffer, 70% smoother, and extremely harder than steel balls resulting in a more durable material that exhibits less wear reducing debris that could accumulate on the surface causing intrusive friction. Remember, reduction in debris of any sort within the bearing reduces friction thereby extending the longevity of the handpiece.

Quieter: Whenever friction is reduced so too is the level of noise. For this reason ceramic bearings are generally quieter.

Electric Handpiece Repairs and Maintenance

Electric handpieces offer never-ending torque yet require a high initial and continued maintenance cost.

Manufacturers replace all internal drive parts regardless the problem, causing excessive repair costs, even if only one bearing or water line seal is bad.

Independent repair centers can do a minor rebuild that involves replacing just the bearings and water line seals for a much lower cost extending the time before a major rebuild is required.

Costly Gear Repairs occur when a handpiece is used after the bearings start to breakdown, therefore the shaft no longer rotates on its correct axis putting gears in a bind and causing rapid wear resulting in handpiece failure and high repair costs.

Coarse burs also cause damage to gears with excessive vibration which is not a problem in air driven highspeed handpieces because of feathering. But in the electric highspeed the added torque available allows the user to keep the bur in constant contact with the tooth surface. The vibration caused by the coarse bur is transmitted directly back to the bearings causing rapid bearing failure. Therefore eventual gear damage.

Extend the life of electric handpiece by, make sure you have enough drive air pressure used to cool the motor and the attachment. Consult the manufacturer’s recommendation for proper PSI settings. We recommend having at least 65 PSI at the dental unit.

Be sure to use as much Chip Air and Water while the handpiece is in use to cool the bearings within the head prolonging the bearings life span.

STOP using your electric handpiece as soon as you feel an unusual vibration or unusual noise begin. This could save you hundreds of dollars in repairs.

Minimize your Electric Handpiece Repair Costs by

using fine to medium burs

running the manufactures PSI air settings

using as much Chip Air and Water as possible

seeking a minor rebuild as soon as there is any problem
